 :: Library Information ::
The College Library is available to College staff and students before, during and after the school day for borrowing & returning books, accessing the
College network, reading and studying, and purchasing essential stationery items.
Magazines are available on the stand just inside the door, except for a 'Flip Side','Top Gear' and 'Q' - please ask for those at the counter..
All students are welcome on the understanding that it is a is a 'quiet area' and that sensible, considerate behaviour is expected at all times.
In line with 'classroom policy', students may drink water in study lessons - tho' not at the computers! At all other times, food and drink must be consumed outside.
During lesson times, students must have visible proof of their teacher's permission to use the library - either a Library Permit or a signed note in their planner on the appropriate day.
Use the menu to access the subject resource pages. Although some sites have been blocked for College use by 'Bess', you can still access them at home.
For information about Brighton & Hove Public Library Services available to our community members via our dual-use partner, please see Mile Oak Library.
bulletQuiet reading & study areas available to all.
:: Joining the Library::
If you would like to borrow books etc during 'College Library Opening Times', you must complete and return a PCC Student Membership form. A College Library Card will then be issued, which will be valid for 5 years or until the end of a your Year 11, whichever comes first. These can be extended on a yearly basis if you join our 6th Form.
These cards may only be used in this library during the 'school' day and / or while you are in College uniform. They must be produced when borrowing a book or story tape. If forgotten, you may use your planner or exercise book as ID.
They may not be used to borrow B&H library chargeable items such as DVDs. Although you may return items borrowed on your Brighton & Hove Public Library card, you may not use it to borrow or reserve items in 'school' time - basically until 4pm, or while in uniform.
Except for some nonfiction items, most books etc are issued for 3 weeks or longer to cover a school holiday period.
Students who have opted for G.C.S.E. Music, please click Music Collection for details.
:: Fiction - books, story CDs and tapes ::
Fiction books are usually shelved alphabetically by the authors' surnames. However, if a series is written by different authors, the books are shelved together by the SERIES name, e.g. Dr Who, Mary, Kate & Ashley, My Story etc
Also, some short story anthologies are shelved under the genre - e.g. Animals, Ghosts, Sport
bulletChildren's fiction, to the right as you enter the Library, has many of you favourite      authors, e.g. Roald Dahl, Philip Pullman, J K Rowling, Jacqueline Wilson etc. Plus some    Quick Reads on the coloured carousel.
bulletTeen Reads fiction, to the front of the ICT area, may be more to your liking.
     Here you'll find Dr Who books, Meg Cabot, Anthony Horowitz, the 'My Story' series,      Garth Nix, Philip Pullman, Louise Rennison, Tolkien and many more.
bulletIn Year 9 or above? Then you may borrow books from the Adult Fiction section.
bulletIf you like listening to your favourite books, there are story tapes & cds in each of the      above fiction sections. These are FREE to borrow and they are issued for 3 weeks. Only      1 at a time.
bulletSee Fiction Focus for full details of our fiction promotions.
bulletSuggestions for new books? ... please see me, I will often buy books on request,      especially if I think other students will enjoy them..
For more information see: Fiction Focus and the KS3 Reading Challenge, plus of course the New Books listings on the noticeboard in the lobby.
:: Nonfiction :: Books, Maps, etc ::

bulletBooks about Brighton, Hove & Portslade etc are in the Local Information section on the      shelves backing onto the College ICT Area. Whether it's haunted houses, football or      music - if it happened in this area, it'll be here.
bulletChildren's nonfiction begins to the right of the photocopier along the whole of that wall.
bulletTeen Reads nonfiction is on the back wall.

:: Reservations ::
If you wish to reserve a particular book using your College Library Card, please ask for an orange Reservation form at the counter. Simply complete it and hand it in.
When it is available for you, a slip will be sent via your Tutor.
You may use these to reserve any book at this library - PCC or Mile Oak. By all means use the Library Catalogue on the Internet or via the OPAC terminal to check if we have a copy but do NOT use either of these to place a reservation.
If the item is not available at this library, ask if I have ordered or would order it. Or you may use your public library card - not your College card - to reserve it from another Brighton & Hove library .
:: Overdues ::
Remember to return your books on time. Late items incur fines of 5p per item per day for 6 days increasing thereafter to 10p per item per day to a maximum of £5 per item. If you do forget, we'll send a reminder to which you should respond a.s.a.p.
If you have overdue items because you have been ill, as long as your tutor tells us, we will renew the item and cancel any fines.
Please see your Student F.A.Q. leaflet for further details.
:: Lost & Damaged ::
Please take care of all items borrowed on your card. They are your responsibility.
Lost or damaged items have to be paid for. Keep them away from pets and younger siblings. If you have a drink in your bag, make sure the container does not leak.
:: Online Public Access Catalogue - OPAC ::
The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) pc is at the back of the library. Use this to access the Catalogue to see the books available at this library - that is those items shown as location PCC or Mile Oak libraries. If you would like to reserve any, see below.
You may also access your own borrower details on the OPAC. To do this you will need your card number and your library PIN. To get your PIN, present your College Library Card and 1 other form of ID, such as your planner, to a member of staff at the counter. If any items are overdue, remember to return or renew them at the counter not via the OPAC or website.
:: Photocopier ::
Photocopier. Although it is not free, it is one of the cheapest in the area.
     A4 - 5p per copy for black & white and 50p for colour.
     A3 - 10p per copy for black & white and £1.00 for colour.
Please note that it does not give change. If required, change and help are available from the counter.
